When Alain Roy and Mike Zimmer bought Forsyth Park Inn in May 2014, they were buying a chunk of history that extended back to a time before their grandparents were alive. The graceful yellow and white building looking out over what is now Forsyth Park was first created as a private home in the 1890s. Soon after its construction, the house was bought by a famous Nova Scotia sea captain, Aaron Flint Churchill. Captain Churchill, known as “Rudder” due to heroic actions he took to save a ship in the 1860s, took his new bride to Savannah and bought the spacious home to be their winter residence. He and his wife lived there until their deaths in the 1920s. With the changes of a new era, the lovely building was reimagined as a boarding house and an apartment house before it was finally made into an inn in the 1980s.
Savannah is rich in history, and Forsyth Park – now lush with azaleas and live oak trees – was once a muddy campground for Union troops, when Savannah surrendered to General Sherman on his march to the sea. While those harsh days are far in the past, this lovely inn is thriving beautifully in the present moment. The owners have lavished attention on every detail of atmosphere and service, furnishing each of the 11 rooms individually and hosting intimate weddings in their courtyard garden.
The inn’s rooms and separate cottage are friendly to children and pets, and the staff take pains to nurture guests with inventive breakfasts and plenty of sightseeing information. Complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres foster an old-fashioned leisurely atmosphere of romance, where you can relax on the veranda and enjoy the peaceful views of Forsyth Park. The original builders in the 1890s chose the location of their house well, as in the present day, it’s easy to walk to the heart of Savannah. Whether you want to stroll along the river, shop for antiques or stop for a cup of coffee, the historic district is ready and waiting for you. Bean Counters Bookkeeping is proud to have Forsyth Park Inn as one of our clients.
